Inspiration from the HBA Woman of the Year

We are still leading from the foot of the table, not the seats of power

The Woman of the Year event hosted by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) always leaves me feeling empowered, and this year was no different.

Mike Kaufmann, 2012 Honorable Mentor, told the packed room that it’s important to get men involved in women’s initiatives in the workplace. He also said that he was given the biggest break in his career from a woman who was willing to take a chance on him. Carolyn Buck Luce was honored as Woman of the Year and gave an inspiring speech. I’ve pulled a few highlights but you can also read the whole speech.

Buck Luce noted that it’s an exciting time in the pharmaceutical industry “as we move from focusing on what we make to whom we serve.” She discussed the progress that women have made in business and the changes still to be made. “Regardless of our numbers in the ranks, the progress of getting women to the top has stalled and we still make up only a minority of leadership in all public and private sectors. We are still leading from the foot of the table, not the seats of power.”

Buck Luce talked about a course she teaches at Columbia University entitled “Women and Power.” “I have found that women are nervous about that word–Power. And they are schizophrenic about the subject of ambition,” said Buck Luce. “Think about that for a second. How comfortable are you proclaiming your ambition to be powerful? For the term paper, the students have to declare their Purpose–for what purpose are they on this planet? Then they have to do an inventory of their current power and plot an action plan on how they are going to increase their power and use it intentionally to make progress on their purpose.”

She challenged everyone in the room to answer the question, why are you on the planet?

Women helping women change the world
The lunch also recognized the Rising Stars from biotech and pharmaceutical companies–women whose outstanding accomplishments make a difference in the industry. If you are a woman working in healthcare, you should join the nonprofit HBA. It’s a wonderful way to make connections and, by volunteering for a committee, an excellent way to diversify your skill set. As Nancy Larsen, 2012 STAR Volunteer, pointed out, “Paul Revere was a silversmith, but we know him for the night he volunteered!”
