While we are still waiting for the FDA to provide formal guidance on biopharma's use of the internet and social media, they have made some announcements.

The agency issued rules for mobile medical devices. The Medical Device Data Systems rule classifies most health-related IT devices as Class I, or low-risk, medical devices. The FDA also announced three new studies:

  1. Examining how risk information is presented on prescription brand websites
  2. How features like personal testimonial videos and animated mechanisms of action influence understanding of risks and benefits
  3. Exploring whether links to and citations from external organizations referenced on brand sites influence risk/benefit perceptions.

On May 9, the FDA sent a letter to Warner Chilcott about a video posted on YouTube. Similar to other letters, this wasn't about YouTube, but about the omission of risk information. If done correctly, video can be a very effective tool. The latest Pew Internet data, highlighted below, found that 25% of internet users have watched an online video about health or medical issues.
